Sarah Michelle Gellar Blames One Executive For Scrapping ‘Buffy’ Reboot Category Icon

Sarah Michelle Gellar criticized the cancellation of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, which was set for Hulu. The actress blamed an unnamed executive who “was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series.” Sources confirm Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich made the final decision. The reboot, directed by Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao, featured Gellar reprising her role alongside new Slayer Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Gellar called the timing “saddened,” as news broke before Zhao’s Oscar nominations ceremony. However, industry sources say the pilot just wasn’t very good. Since Disney owns the Buffy intellectual property, the project cannot be shopped to other networks.
