WolfPack head coach Grimm reflects on program-best season, looks ahead to future

KAMLOOPS — TRU WolfPack women’s volleyball head coach Chad Grimm is confident his team is well-seasoned for the future.

“Until you go through it, you don’t know what it’s going to feel like to be in the third match of a playoff series at home,” Grimm said. “You don’t know what it’s going to be like in the Final Four against the No. 1 team in the country in their home gym. You don’t know what it’s going to be like to be in a national quarter-final. For everybody, that’s a learning experience and something they can take and put it in their toolbox moving forward.”

The WolfPack posted a program-best regular season record (14-6) and knocked off the defending national champions, the Manitoba Bisons, in a Canada West quarter-final in Kamloops – the first home playoff series in program history.

They were unable to post a victory at the Canada West Final Four in Edmonton, but the WolfPack’s top-four finish in the conference was enough to punch their ticket to nationals, marking another first for the program.

TRU dropped both of its matches in five sets at the U Sports Women’s Volleyball Championship, falling to Sherbrooke of Quebec in the quarter-final round and Saint Mary’s of Halifax in a consolation semifinal.

The Alberta Pandas of Edmonton bested Sherbrooke 3-0 to win the Canadian title.

“We felt coming in that we had a shot at anybody in the tournament and I think that proved correct,” said Grimm, the Canada West women’s volleyball coach of the year.

While several of the top teams in Canada West are expected to experience significant roster turnover in the off-season, the WolfPack are likely to return most of their starting lineup.

“We haven’t done our year-end meetings just to confirm, but yeah, besides the graduating players, the bulk are returning. At least they’ve indicated they are,” Grimm said. “This group will be in a pretty good spot to, hopefully, take our experiences from this year and try to make another run next year.”
