KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Sports Hall of Fame has announced another two inductees who will be enshrined as part of the class of 2026.

The 1980 Senior Women’s volleyball team – the Kamloops Turbulence – are set to become the 29th team inducted into the Kamloops Sports of Fame. They’ll be joined by the Kamloops Sports Legacy Fund Society, which was founded following of the sale of Kamloops Blazers in 2007.

The Kamloops Turbulence was formed by a group of women who decided to enter a team in the B.C. Women’s Senior ‘A’ Volleyball League.

Those ten woman, with varied backgrounds in playing volleyball, were coached by Rocky Hudson and Jim Bottoms. They won all eight matches and dropped just two sets en route to a provincial title in March 1980 that year.

The next month at the Western Canadian Championships in Edmonton, the Turbulence didn’t drop a set as they won all five matches. Later in April, they also won all six matches against teams from Portland, Seattle and Vancouver at the Can-Am Pacific Northwest Volleyball Tournament in Vancouver.

Following its establishment, the Kamloops Sports Legacy Fund has invested in amateur sport organizations across Kamloops and the surrounding regions in the form of annual grants. The fund has dispersed more than $6 million to over than 130 organizations since that grant program began in 2009.

The perpetual, community-based endowment was funded by the $6.1 million sale of the Blazers to River City Hockey as well as an additional $1.4 million following the dissolution of the Blazers Foundation in 2008. Grants are allocated based on the previous year’s return on the investment.

The Kamloops Turbulence and the Kamloops Sports Legacy Fund will join longtime football coach Glenn Armstrong, Olympian speed skater Jessica Hewitt, and international baseball and softball umpire Kelly Hunter as the other inductees into the Kamloops Sports Hall of Fame this year.

The 2026 Kamloops Sports Hall of Fame Induction ceremony will take place on April 11 at Coast Kamloops Hotel and Conference Centre. The winners of the annual Kamloops Athletic Awards will also be honoured at this banquet, though nominees have yet to be revealed.
