KAMLOOPS — Get your green thumbs ready as Kamloops Seedy Saturday opens today (March 14), supporting local gardeners and seed growers.

The event is open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Mount Paul Community Food Centre at 140 Laburnum Street on the North Shore. Entry is free, though donations are welcomed, with proceeds going to food security and sovereignty programs at the Mount Paul Community Food Centre.

Seeds will be available for sale from local vendors, as well as others available for free or by donation from local community groups. There will also be hands-on art making and creative space in collaboration with the Stínesten Gallery and the Kamloops Art Gallery.

“Food production, even on a small scale, is impactful! Growing strawberries in pots on a balcony or herbs in a windowsill can enhance a recipe, increase sense of self-worth and provide hands-on experiences with plants and soil systems,” said the Kamloops Farmers’ Market Society, in a statement.

“Eating in season, highlighting local products to purchase, and creating stronger bonds among our community members is what the Kamloops Regional Farmers Market and the Mount Paul Community Food Center want to nurture.”

Seedy Saturday began in Canada in 1990 as a way to raise awareness and push back against seed saving restrictions and the concentration of seed production to corporations. The Farmers’ Market Society says 36 years later, this event in Kamloops aims to celebrate local food, seeds, food security and sovereignty.

“We have awesome community groups attending who focus on food access, and food production, along with some of our regular market vendors,” added the Kamloops Farmers’ Market.

“The well being of our community relies on a resilient, sovereign, and just local food system. Come out and support local farmers, food producers, connect with local groups, and join us in creating it.”
