Storm lead Heat 2-0 in first-round KIJHL playoff series; Centennials trailing against Grizzlies

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Storm are in the driver’s seat in their first-round playoff KIJHL series against the Chase Heat.


The Storm won game two on Saturday (March 7) 6-3 to they lead the best-of-seven series two games to zero. Kamloops also won Friday’s opening game 4-1.

Noah Paulsen, Wyatt Olson, Kuy Schmirler, Nicholas Clark, David Ander, and Teghan Mullin scored for the Storm Saturday night at McArthur Island, while Malcolm Anderson and Carter McKenzie responded for Chase.

Brenner Fyfe stopped 22 of 25 shots to pick up his second win of the playoffs, while Stanislav Stefaniv stopped 37 of 43 shots in the loss.

On Friday, the Storm rode second period goals from Luca D’Amore, Mullin, Clark, and Aidan Fisher to victory as Michael Cumby scored a consolation goal for Chase. Fyfe had 16 saves in the win while Ryan Bain stopped 43 of 47 shots for the Heat.

The Heat are set to host games three and four of the series at the Art Holding Memorial Area on Tuesday and Wednesday (March 10 and 11). Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. on both nights.

Game 5, if needed, will be played at McArthur Island on Friday (March 13).

Centennials in 2-0 hole

The Merritt Centennials are in tough after they were blanked 5-0 by the Revelstoke Grizzlies in game two of their playoff series at the Revelstoke Forum. The Grizzlies also took game one 5-4 in overtime on Friday.

Walker Overwater scored a natural hat trick for Revelstoke as Connor Shymoniak and Brennen Coutts also found the back of the net. Austin Seibel had a 43-save shutout for the Grizzlies.

Merritt’s Tyler Picha stopped 32 of the 37 shots he faced on Saturday.

On Friday night, the Centennials were up 3-2 after two periods, but weren’t able to hold on for the upset win as Noah Frick scored the winner 6:04 into the extra frame.

Merritt got goals from Noah Lawless, Troy Horn, Travis Langlois, and Marcus Hughes. Blake Cameron, Liam O’Neil, Overwater, and Frick struck in regulation for Revelstoke. Frick’s first of the night – at 15:07 of the third period – forced overtime.

Seibel stopped 44 of 48 shots for Revelstoke in the win, while Sam Saskiw turned aside 43 of 48 in a losing effort.

The Centennials will look to bounce back as the series shifts to Merritt for games three and four. Games will be played at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Game 5, if needed, will be played in Revelstoke on Friday.
