Medical services returning to Sun Peaks as doctor set to reopen practice at ski patrol facility

SUN PEAKS, B.C. — Medical services will be returning to Sun Peaks after five months after the doctor who pulled out of negotiations with the Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality reached an agreement with Sun Peaks Resort.

The agreement allows Dr. Catherine Nowierski to operate an independent medical practice from the Sun Peaks Mountain Patrol facility, which is located in the same building as the Sun Peaks Community Health Centre.

“Dr. Nowierski has already worked with Sun Peaks Mountain Patrol to provide on-site medical support for guests,” Sun Peaks Resort said in a statement to CFJC Today, noting the new practice will serve patients in the communities of Sun Peaks and Heffley Creek.

Nowierski confirmed the agreement on her website, adding she will begin seeing patients this Thursday (March 12). The clinic is currently booking appointments and no walk-in appointments are being accepted at this time.

Nowierski was in negotiations to buy the Sun Peaks Community Health Centre, which has been closed since Oct. 10, after council ended the lease held by the Supporting Team Excellence with Patients Society (STEPS).

While Sun Peaks council was hesitant at first to sell the community-owned asset, it changed its mind following feedback from the community. However, Mayor Rob O’Toole told CFJC Today last month that the two sides weren’t able to get the deal done.

“A lease-only option is a far different scenario than one where you’re talking about a community-owned asset that has been fundraised locally for 30 years,” O’Toole said. “To turn that over to a private for-profit business is not something you can draw up a contact on a napkin and sign off on.”

Nowierski resigned from the Sun Peaks Health Centre last summer but was picked as the new operator in the fall as hers was the only proposal submitted through a Request for Proposals (RFP) process that sought an operator to lease and operate the clinic.

“The municipality is expanding the resort’s lease to include some space not used in the past by anyone,” O’Toole said of the new agreement. “This will give space for the doctor to operate.”

Work to reopen Sun Peaks Health Centre ongoing

The resort municipality is not involved in this agreement, and Nowierski will not have access to the Sun Peaks Health Centre’s equipment or space. An update on the work being done to reopen the clinic is set to be presented at the Tuesday’s (March 10) Sun Peaks council meeting.

“As the Health Centre remains closed, the Municipality recognizes the need and urgency to explore all options and move ahead with a new plan to get an operator in place and the Health Centre re-opened, a staff report included the meeting’s agenda said.

“Re-opening the Health Centre remains a critical priority.”

O’Toole told CFJC there is no timeline when the clinic could reopen, though he said Sun Peaks council will explore all of its options. He also said the option that is eventually picked will be “the best one for the community.”

He added the agreement between Nowierski and Sun Peaks Resort is “good news” as helps ease some concerns raised by local residents about the lack of medical services in Sun Peaks.

“The resort is supportive of the Sun Peaks Municipality as they continue to pursue additional doctors and health care for the Sun Peaks community,” added the statement from Sun Peaks Resort.
