SCOTCH CREEK, B.C. — Library services will be returning to the North Shuswap nearly three years after the Bush Creek East wildfire destroyed the previous library as it tore through the area.

The Okanagan Regional Library (ORL) has scheduled a grand opening of the new North Shuswap Community Library branch this Wednesday (March 11). The library will be located at 3871 Squilax-Anglemont Rd in Scotch Creek.

“We’re very excited to announce the next chapter for our North Shuswap community library,” a statement from the Okanagan Regional Library said.

“The new space includes a public meeting room for gatherings, learning opportunities, and local collaboration, along with a dedicated staff office to support day-to-day service.”

Since the Aug. 2023 fire, ORL says it has provided library services to residents in the North Shuswap from a series of temporary locations. It adds this custom-built branch – which is twice as large as the original building – will be a permanent new home for readers, learners, and community members across the North Shuswap.

“This re-opening is also a testament to the commitment of branch staff who ensured that library services remained available through challenging circumstances. Their dedication helped sustain a vital community hub when it was needed most,” ORL added.

The North Shuswap Library is closed this Sunday to Tuesday (March 8 to 10) as staff move into the new location. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set to take place at 11:00 a.m. this Wednesday morning.

“Whether you’ve been visiting the temporary locations or are stepping into your local library for the first time, this celebration belongs to you,” the statement concluded.
