Whundas finish fifth at AA senior boys basketball provincials

LANGLEY, B.C. — The Westsyde Whundas have finished in fifth place in the AA senior boys basketball provincial championships.

The ninth-seeded Whundas beat the Summerland Rockets 82-59 in the 5th/6th place game Saturday (March 7) morning at the Langley Events Centre. Jaren Porter sunk an incredible 12 three-point shots as he finished with 41 points. Jacob McKearney added 11 points Saturday.

Westsyde began with a 77-54 win over the Charles Hays Rainmakers from Prince Rupert on Wednesday. Porter led with 13 points while McKearney (13), Calder MacLeod (11) and Barrett Thompson (10) all finished in the double digits.

The Whundas dropped to the consolation side of the bracket after they lost Thursday’s quarter-final 91-82 to the top ranked Notre Dame Jugglers of Vancouver. Once again, it was McKearney (27) and Porter (24) who led the way for Westsyde.

The Kamloops team bounced back on Friday to beat the Surrey Christian Falcons 82-59 to earn their berth in the 5th/6th place game. It was Jovan Johannson’s turn to shine as he led the Whundas with 30 points.

The Whundas finished in fourth place at last season’s AA senior boys provincials. They also won the provincial title in 2022.

Last week, the Westsyde senior girls team finished in fourth place at the AA girls basketball provincial championships. In the AAA senior girls tournament, the Sa-Hali Sabres beat the Valleyview Vikes to finish in fifth place.
