KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Search and Rescue (KSAR) is hosting a pair of volunteer information sessions this month as it looks for new members to join its ranks.

Volunteer information sessions will held Thursday (March 5) between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. and again next Saturday (March 14) between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Both sessions will be held at KSAR’s headquarters at 800 Mission Flats Road and registration is not required.

“During the session, you’ll learn more about our organization through a brief presentation, hear directly from KSAR team members, and gain insight into the qualities we look for in candidates – including required skills, experience, commitment and availability,” a statement from KSAR said.

“These sessions are designed to help you make an informed decision before applying.”

KSAR spokesperson Diana Gerlof told CFJC Today the organization is hoping to get between 20 and 25 new members-in-training to enter the Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) course in the fall.

“Based on past experience, some realize in the period leading up to GSAR, the significant time commitment that is required to meet the training and task expectations,” Gerlof said. “As a result, a number of candidates may withdraw from the program.”

“To account for this anticipated attrition, we intentionally begin with a larger group. Our goal is to interview all applicants whom we believe are a strong fit for the program, ensuring we build a qualified pool that allows us to ultimately meet our target enrollment.”

The KSAR team currently consists of 49 members, with 43 members responsible for conducting searches. The other six members serve in auxiliary/support roles and help with things like radio communication or in administration and legal.

“If you’ve been thinking about volunteering and giving back to your community, this is your opportunity to learn more,” the statement from KSAR added. “KSAR is a 100 per cent volunteer-run team providing essential, life-saving services 24/7, 365 days a year.”
