Mild Kamloops-area winter forces Harper Mountain to halt operations for a third time

KAMLOOPS — For the third time this winter, operations are halted at Harper Mountain.

On its website, the Kamloops-area resort says skiing and tubing are on hold “until colder weather and snow returns.”

“The skiing was good right up until this past weekend. Unfortunately these past few warm days have hit us hard,” a statement from Harper Mountain said. “We will be pausing operations until winter returns.”

Harper Mountain was closed from Jan. 13 to Jan. 23 and again from Feb. 3 to Feb. 14 due to spells of warmer weather. It remans unclear whether the Kamloops-area resort will reopen for this ski season.

As of Thursday (March 5) morning, Environment Canada says Kamloops will experience daytime high temperatures in the double digits until Saturday (March 7) along with overnight lows above zero. Daytime temperatures are expected to drop into the high single-digits starting Sunday, with overnight lows below zero also expected.

People with Harper Mountain season passes can avail a 50 per cent discount on a full day lift ticket at Sun Peaks Resort for the rest of the ski season. Sun Peaks Resort is currently scheduled to close on April 6.

“This season has been challenging for many ski areas in B.C., but one thing that continues to stand out is how ski areas support each other,” the statement added. “We are deeply grateful for [Sun Peaks’] generosity and support in many ways.”
