Armstrong leaves Kamloops Track and Field Club for coaching job in Qatar

KAMLOOPS — Dylan Armstrong has moved on from his coaching position with the Kamloops Track and Field Club (KTFC).

Judy Armstrong, Dylan’s mother and president of the KTFC, told CFJC Today that he has accepted a coaching position with Aspire Academy in Doha, Qatar.

“He’s got to think about his family and his retirement down the road,” Judy Armstrong said. “We wish him the very best. He’ll do a great job and it’s an opportunity he needs to pursue.”

Armstrong was overseeing the high-performance stable of athletes at the KTFC, a group that included Olympic and two-time world champion hammer thrower Ethan Katzberg (a Kamloops resident), rising star Nova Kienast of Germany and Denzel Comenentia of the Netherlands.

“There will no longer be high-performance athletes here,” Judy added. “Having said that, Ethan will still be coached by Dylan.”

Dylan Armstrong, an Olympic bronze medallist shot putter, learned much of what he teaches to Katzberg while under the tutelage of Dr. Anatoliy Bondarchuk, the world-renowned throws coach who died in December

“The throws became very popular,” Judy Armstong said. “More and more athletes were coming here. With the success of Greg [Stewart] and Ethan and his program – 13 years with Dr. B –  there were other kids starting to come here. That will cease now. There was nothing coming forward for a centre here [in Kamloops] from Athletics Canada or BC Athletics.”

No other KTFC programming will be impacted by the departure of Dylan Armstrong, according to the club president.

“On a personal level, I’ll miss him, his wife and my grandchildren terribly,” Judy Armstrong said.
