SOUND OFF: TRU professor’s perspective does not reflect that of Kamloops’ Iranian community

Mar 4, 2026 | 2:13 PM

I AM WRITING REGARDING the recent article about Iran and the ongoing conflict. As an Iranian living in Kamloops, I appreciate that CFJC News is covering international events that affect our community. However, I am deeply concerned that the article presents a perspective that does not reflect the views of many Iranians, both locally and globally.

For nearly two months, members of the Persian community in Kamloops have been gathering every Sunday and some Saturdays to raise awareness about the ongoing human rights violations committed by the Islamic Republic. For 47 years, this regime has been responsible for the deaths of countless individuals, not only in Iran, but also in countries such as Syria, Yemen, Libya, Ukraine and has been linked to the support of extremist and terrorist organizations internationally.

While the article focuses on oil prices and geopolitical strategy, the central issue for many Iranians is not fuel costs or market disruption. It is the loss of innocent civilian lives and decades of repression. From our perspective, what is happening is not simply a conventional war; it is part of a broader struggle to free millions of Iranians who have been living under systemic oppression.

Additionally, many Iranians inside and outside the country have clearly expressed their desire for fundamental political change. A significant portion of the diaspora supports Reza Pahlavi as a transitional figure, and there are organized, vocal demands for a democratic future. To suggest there is no coherent opposition does not fully capture the current reality of political mobilization among Iranians worldwide.

As a trusted news outlet in Kamloops, CFJC News carries an important responsibility to ensure that coverage is balanced and that multiple perspectives within affected communities are represented. I respectfully urge you to seek broader voices from the Iranian community before characterizing complex political dynamics as unclear or directionless.

Thank-you for your attention to this matter. I would welcome the opportunity to share further information or connect you with other members of the local Iranian community if helpful.
