Kamloops Film Festival plans for 10 days of cinephile fun

KAMLOOPS — This year marks 30 years for the Kamloops Film Festival. It takes place downtown at the historic Paramount Theatre from March 5 – 14, showcasing local, national and international film artists around the globe. Throughout the festival, there will be different events that movie lovers of all ages can participate in.

“This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Kamloops Film Festival. That’s a huge milestone for us. The festival really started with just wanting to bring in films from around the world. The best of Canadian films to Kamloops, because otherwise those films wouldn’t, wouldn’t show here. We are just continuing on that tradition. And this year, you know, the momentum’s just really grown,” said Colette Abbott, executive director of the Kamloops Film Society.

The festival has 26 films over its 10-day run with a variety of genres including comedies, documentaries, dramas and even more.

“I really appreciate the fact that the film festival lets us bring in all these foreign films that we usually wouldn’t get, and we can celebrate movies from all over the world. We have tons of Canadian films. We have two BC-made films. We have BC made shorts playing throughout the whole festival. We have films from Norway, from China, from Brazil,” said programming director Sam Theriault.

The Brazilian film ‘The Secret Agent’ is a foreign-language film filled with action and drama.

“I’ve never seen a Brazilian film before this one. I’d heard that their cinema has a sort of idiosyncrasy; they’re really not beholden to American film techniques, and it’s incredible,” said Theriault. 

Alongside the screenings, there’s a full schedule of events outside of the theatre, adding another layer of entertainment for the community.

“One of the really great things about the festival is just coming together and watching the films, inside a movie theatre with other people. It’s a unique experience. It’s very different than just watching a movie at home,” said Abbott.
