Kamloops Curling Club trio picks up first win with Team B.C. at Brier

ST. JOHN’S, NFLD. — Team B.C. and its three Kamloops Curling Club members are off the schneid at the Montana’s Brier in St. John’s, Nfld.

Jared Kolomaya, Mitchell Kopytko and Coburn Fadden of Kamloops, along with skip Cody Tanaka of Richmond, earned an 8-3 win over Northwest Territories on Wednesday (March 4).

“It’s pretty awesome,” Fadden said. “It’s very exciting. For three of the four of us, it’s our first Brier. Nobody comes here to lose eight straight. It’s good to finally put it all together and get that win on the board.”

B.C. (1-5) came agonizingly close to its first win on Tuesday night, only to suffer an 11-10 extra-end defeat to Mike McEwen and his Saskatchewan rink, which is ranked fifth in Canada.

The loss did not prove to be demoralizing.

“We stole a point in the McEwen game last night and it was the first steal they gave up all week,” Fadden said. “We were close. They had to throw their last rock to win the game. It was the encouragement we needed going into today.”

Meanwhile, Kamloops skip Matt Dunstone and his Manitoba team survived a scare on Wednesday, earning a last-rock victory over Yukon.

“With a 6-5 win, Dunstone improved to 5-1 and moved into second place in Pool B standings.

The top three teams will advance to the playoffs after the conclusion of round-robin play on Thursday.

Both B.C. and Manitoba (Dunstone) are scheduled to play twice on Thursday.
