Shackan Indian Band and BC Wildfire Service planning 30-ha prescribed burn southeast of Spences Bridge
MERRITT, B.C. — A 30-hectare prescribed burn along Highway 8 between Merritt and Spences Bridge could begin as early as next week.
The BC Wildfire Service says it’s supporting Shackan Indian Band as part of a three-year project that covers a total of 75 hectares. The project began in spring 2025 although the latest 30-hectare burn will take plae on Shackan Indian Reserve No. 11, nearly 30 kilometres southeast of Spences Bridge, adjacent to Highway 8.
In a news release issued Tuesday (March 3), the wildfire service says smoke may be visible from Highway 8, Spences Bridge, Shackan Indian Reserve No. 11 and the surrounding area.
The prescribed burn could begin as early as Monday, March 9, although it’s dependent on site and weather conditions.
