Westsyde finishes fourth at AA provincials; Sa-Hali tops Valleyview to finish fifth in AAA tournament

LANGLEY, B.C. — The Westsyde Whundas will have to settle for fourth place at the AA girls basketball provincial championships.

The 13th ranked Whundas lost 94-44 to the second-ranked Credo Christian Kodiaks from Langley in a bronze medal game Saturday (Feb. 28) afternoon. Meena Litt led the way for Westsyde with 16 points while Ryen Scott added 13.

Credo Christian’s Hailey Stam, Presley Kobes and Kallie Brenk combined for 66 total points – 22 each – in the bronze medal game, while Kenzie Raap added 18 of her own.

The underdog Whundas had two upset wins in Langley – a 78-69 win over fifth-ranked Pacific Christian of Victoria in a quarter-final game on Thursday and a 75-71 win over the fourth-ranked Notre Dame Jugglers of Vancouver in the first round on Wednesday.

A third upset was not on the cards at the Langley Events Centre as the Whundas lost 85-52 to the top-ranked Holy Cross Crusaders from Surrey in a semi-final on Friday. Litt had 24 points in that loss while Scott poured in 18 of her own.

Holy Cross knocked off the third-ranked St. Thomas More Collegiate Knights from Burnaby 81-51 to win the provincial AA title.

Over in AAA senior girls basketball provincial tournament, the Sa-Hali Sabres beat the Valleyview Vikes 54-43 in the all-Kamloops 5th/6th place game Saturday.

Iyin Aina led the way with 16 points for the Sabres while Sameera Gill finished with 11 points for the Vikes.

The seventh-ranked Sa-Hali Sabres beat the tenth-ranked Little Flower Academy from Vancouver 52-31 in the first round Wednesday, but then lost 79-48 to the second-ranked Langley Christian Lightning on Thursday in the round-of-eight.

Sa-Hali then beat the sixth-ranked Pitt Meadows Marauders 52-47 on Friday.

The ninth-ranked Valleyview Vikes opened the tournament with a 60-42 win over the eighth-ranked Crofton House Falcons from Vancouver. They followed that up with a 55-48 loss to the top-ranked Vernon Panthers in Thursday’s quarter-final.

Valleyview rebounded to beat Mark R. Isfeld Ice from Courtenay 48-46 Friday morning to set up the showdown with Sa-Hali, who were the reigning AAA silver medalists.

Vernon beat the Langley Christian 71-62 to win the provincial AAA title, while the third-ranked St. Michaels University School Blue Jags from Victoria beat the fifth-ranked Duchess Park Condors from Prince George 69-38 to win bronze.
