EVERETT, WASH. — The Kamloops Blazers have slumped to their sixth defeat in a row after they dropped an 8-3 decision to the league-leading Everett Silvertips Friday (Feb. 27) night in Washington State.

The Blazers led 2-1 midway through the first period at the Angel of the Winds Arena before the Silvertips took control and scored seven of the final eight goals scored on the night. The line of Julius Miettinen, Matias Vanhanen, and Carter Bear combined for 12 points, as the trio were named the game’s three stars.

It was the Blazers who opened the scoring Friday night after Josh Evaschesen scored a shorthanded goal at 8:22 of the first period. While three Silvertips were converging on Tommy Lafreniere, he dished a cross-ice pass to Evaschesen, who beat Anders Miller low on his blocker side.

While Vanhanen equalized about 90 seconds later, Cooper Moore restored the Blazers one-goal lead at 13:05. He deflected a pass from Jordan Keller over Miller’s shoulder to make it 2-1 Blazers.

That lead didn’t last long as Miettinen struck twice in the period to sent the Silvertips into the locker room up 3-2. Miettinen scored just 20 seconds after Moore did to restore parity and again on the power play at 18:11 of the period.

Second period goals from Bear and Miettinen had Everett up 5-2 before Lafreniere fired a laser from the slot at 18:08 of the second to bring the Blazers back with two goals.

The Silvertips quickly snuffed out any hopes of a Blazers comeback as Luke Vlooswyk made it a three goal game at 19:22 of the second. Vanhanen and Lukas Kaplan added third period goals to make it an 8-3 final.

Blazers netminder Ivans Kufterins made 37 saves on 45 shots in the loss. Miller stopped 30 of 33 to earn the win.

Kamloops (25-21-7-5) has fallen to sixth in the Western Conference with 62 points from 58 games. They’re one point back of fifth place Spokane (31-26-1-0) and two ahead of seventh place Portland (27-25-5-1) with ten games left to play.

The Blazers will look to rebound when they host the last place Vancouver Giants (21-34-1-2) at 6:00 this evening. It’s the first game in a five game homestand at Sandman Centre.
