KAMLOOPS — There will be more construction coming to the Fourth Avenue corridor in downtown Kamloops next week.

The City of Kamloops says crews are set to resume working on the Fourth Avenue sewer main project on Monday (March 2). This is the final phase of work to upgrade capacity to accommodate the City Gardens development and the Kamloops Centre for the Arts.

According to the city, Fourth Avenue will be closed between Seymour Street and St. Paul Street effective immediately so crews can move traffic signal equipment for arts centre site. On Monday, the closure will expand to mid-block between St. Paul Street and Battle Street, meaning east/west traffic on St. Paul Street will also be impacted until mid-April.

In mid-April, the city notes the work zone will be reduced to between St. Paul Street and Battle Street only.

“Traffic, parking, alley access and transit will be temporarily impacted within the construction zone on a block-by-block phased basis, as crews move southbound to Battle Street,” the city said, in a statement.

“All timelines are subject to change and weather dependent.”

While construction is scheduled to take place between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, work will also be done on weekends as required, the city said. It also noted that road closures will remain in effect around the clock until mid-May, which is when construction is scheduled to wrap up.

“Pedestrian and business access will be maintained and prioritized during the work,” the city statement added. “Transit remains detoured to Sixth Avenue.”

Work to replace the sewer main along Fourth Avenue began at Lansdowne Street in July last year and crews made it to St. Paul Street by the end of the construction season.

Fourth Avenue between Seymour Street and St. Paul Street was also closed for two weeks in early February to allow crews to complete shallow utility work near the site of the arts centre.
