Stake Lake ski trails reopening with limited terrain after 6-week closure

KAMLOOPS — (UPDATE Feb. 27): The Overlander Ski Club will be opening the Stake Lake ski trails this weekend, but they caution there will be limited terrain available.

The ski and snowshoe trails south of Kamloops will be open and groomed this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 27 to March 1).

“It’s just for the weekend, it’s supposed to be very warm after that and we barely have any snow, so it won’t last longer than a few day,” Chelsea Francis, the general manager of the Overlander Ski Club told CFJC Today.

The ski trails have been closed since Jan. 15 due to a lack of snow and warmer temperatures in the area. That closure came less than a month after the cross-country ski season began, and the Overlander Ski Club was also forced to cancel two events this season.

“Over the last week we have got about 5 cm of snow,” club officials said in a post on Facebook. “While it’s not much, we might as well make the best of it and do a little skiing.”

“The trail at the parking area is very icy so people need to use caution. [It] may be best to walk to one of the gates [or] park at the north end of the parking lot and ski out that way.”

Some ski trails will be open and groomed this Friday through Sunday and people are also being told to watch for early season conditions. They’re also being asked to not ski on trails that have not been groomed. The dog trail will remain closed, the club added.

“There is very thin fresh snow on some trails so icy conditions will persist in these areas,” the Overlander Ski Club added. “Darker snow usually means icy near the surface.”

“Trails will experience freeze-thaw weather over the weekend so conditions will change fast.”

Day passes will be $9 and club officials also say rentals will be available. They also note the lodge at Stake Lake will be open between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

While people are also able to walk the snowshoe trails at Stake Lake this weekend, Francis doesn’t recommend using snowshoes as the trails are “just dirt and ice.”
