Kamloops Iranian community out in force over weekend

KAMLOOPS — This weekend, dozens of members from Kamloops’ Iranian community were out on Columbia Street and Summit Drive, waving flags and calling for support. The group has been active since the government crackdown in late January.

“We started this protest across the road for about a month. The number of supporters [we see] is increasing. You hear the people shouting and it’s really emotional – and it’s really good support we receive,” said Vahab, a member of the Kamloops Iranian community.

Many of the people here have lost friends and family members. They hope things change in Iran.

“The only thing we want is to have the same justice for the kids. Every kid’s life matters. The kids who died there, they matter. The people who grew up there are just asking for freedom and a normal life to live like humans. Not a second-class citizen,” said Ozhan, another member of the Kamloops Iranian community.

“We’re all humans. It’s called empathy. I know a lot of people don’t have much anymore. I just want to show that you don’t have to be born in a certain country to not care for it,” said supporter Elizabeth Gammel.

The government in Iran is continuing to silence information from flowing out of the country.

“The Iranian people are looking for freedom. They are fighting for their basic rights. All we can do for them is to be their voice. They came to the streets 42 days ago to ask their governments to give them just basic rights. Instead of giving them some freedom, the government shoots every single one in the street,” said Aida.

Members of the community want international pressure put on the Islamic regime to force it to change. The group plans to continue demonstrations whenever they can for the foreseeable future.
