TK’EMLÚPS TE SECWÉPEMC – A community open house was held by Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc (TteS) Monday (Feb. 23) afternoon as work continues on a new healing house on a property along Shuswap Road.

The federal government pledged $12.5 million toward the project following a promise by then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and a groundbreaking ceremony was held last July.

The healing house will provide mental wellness care, counselling and cultural supports to Indigenous people impacted by Canada’s Indian Residential Schools. The building is a first of its kind in Canada.

“The 2026 timeline is a realistic expectation, especially after the mild winter we’ve had. The hardest part is making sure we’re working with the elements, but also moving full speed ahead,” said Kukwpi7 Rosanne Casimir.

“This building is standing up, and now we’re going to be looking at some inside and outside work moving forward,”

Casimir said the project has had a lot of input from elders and residential school survivors to make sure the space provides the best service possible.

“There’s been a lot of community engagement, a lot of community conversations. Every chance there was to have community, voices and visions brought into this building, they were brought in. It’s definitely been a community, collaborative process,” added Casimir.

The healing house is scheduled to be completed by late 2026.
