Kamloops’ Cassie McNutt recognized by Tidbits of Change Foundation for community service

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops’ Cassie McNutt received an award and post-secondary bursary on Friday (Feb. 20) morning from the Tidbits of Change Foundation.

McNutt was selected for her dedicated work over the past seven years, raising funds for the Kamloops Hospice Society through her Christmas light display and charity drive that has raised more than $260,000 since it began. 

Tidbits of Change recognizes a few people each year across Canada, with the end goal of spreading the message and seeing more young adults strengthen their communities through giving back.

“We hope it just snowballs more and more, and stories like Cassie’s are going to inspire somebody else to do their own story,” said the organization’s Greg Scott. “Cassie has now started some scholarships programs of her own, so these kind of stories, they get out in the communities and somebody hears about them and they do their own things, whatever their story is, whatever their passion is. And sometimes it can be the smallest of things, small change can make a big difference is what we’ve always believed in.”

McNutt is enrolled at TRU, and through the bursary funding was able to switch paths, now looking toward a career in public relations and journalism, something she feels better relates to the work she already does throughout the community. In addition to her charity work, McNutt is also creating her own bursary opportunity for Kamloops students.

“I think in the end, being able to be recognized and basically give myself this platform to hopefully inspire others, like Greg was saying, is really the end, biggest accomplishment with these kinds of recognitions and being able to share my story across Canada,” said McNutt. “Hopefully (it will) inspire other families and other youth, and let people know that no matter what they are doing to support others, no matter how big or how small, you are always making a difference.”
