B.C. proposing legislative changes to allow online driver’s licence renewals

KAMLOOPS — The B.C. government is proposing legislative changes that would allow people to renew or replace their drivers licence’s online.

The province on Thursday (Feb. 19) announced the proposed changes to the Motor Vehicle Act, which if passed, would enable people to also renew or replace BC Identification (BCID), photo BC Service Cards, and combination Driver’s Licence/BC Services Card online.

“Too many people have to take time off work or travel long distances just to renew or replace their ID,” Attorney General Niki Sharma said in a statement.

“By allowing these straightforward transactions online, we’re making life more convenient for people, especially those in rural and remote communities. This is part of our work to modernize government services so they’re easier, faster and more accessible for everyone in British Columbia.”

According to the B.C. government, these online renewals will reduce waiting time for other in-person appointments at ICBC offices across the province. In-person appointments for renewals will still be offered to people who prefer them.

Renewals involving a change in a driver’s information like a name or address, will still require an in-person visit. Drivers with Class 7 learner’s licences can replace a lost or damaged licence online, but they will still need an in-person appointment for retesting to renew their licence.

If passed, the province says these online changes will come into effect in 2027. It will bring B.C. in line with eight other provinces that already offer some form of online driver’s licence renewal.

“By expanding our digital options, we’re making it more convenient for customers to access the services they need, when and where it works best for them,” added Jason McDaniel, the president and CEO of ICBC.

“This enhancement improves accessibility, particularly for those in rural or remote communities, and reflects our commitment to delivering a modern, customer-focused experience for everyone we serve.”
