TRU WolfPack basketball teams reflect on season success, look to bright future

KAMLOOPS – It was somewhat of a disappointing finish for the TRU men’s basketball team, after getting eliminated from the playoffs last weekend. The WolfPack failed to complete the comeback after trailing the Calgary Dinos at the end of the first half, eventually dropping the game by a score of 70-66.

Despite the playoff loss, the men’s team still had plenty of highlights this year. Sweeping the UBC Thunderbirds at War Memorial Arena, Kamloops product Cason Scott made his debut in TRU’s home opener against Trinity Western, and finished the year with the third-most regular-season victories in program history with twelve. Only two seniors are graduating next year, so the WolfPack are expecting to be back in the same situation next year.

“Our future is very bright. We have a very talented core right now,” says 4th-year player Reuben Wright. “We have very key members from our fifth years all the way down to our first years, and there are some teams that will struggle in this next year, and we won’t be one of those.”

For the TRU women’s basketball team, their season ended on a high note. They swept the UNBC Timberwolves in their final two games of the season. They also finished the year with eight total wins, which was the most for the program since 2017-18. It was a big jump from last year, when the team finished the season with a record of 1-19.

“It’s taken time. It can’t happen in one month, even like half a year,” noted Olena Vasylenko, who joined the WolfPack this year. “So we just like trust the process. We just follow the scheme that the coach gives to us. For sure, our chemistry on the team is much better. So I think it’s just taking time for next season.”

The women’s team expects to return the majority, if not all, of its players next season. It was a young group that featured just two players in their third year of eligibility and none in their fourth or fifth years.
