CALGARY — It is the final day of the Canada West regular season and both Thompson Rivers University (TRU) volleyball teams still have plenty to play for.

The TRU men need to beat Calgary in three or four sets this afternoon (Feb. 14) if they want to punch their ticket to the postseason. This after TRU lost 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 22-25, 22-25) to the Dinos at the Jack Simpson Gym last night.

The 6-13 WolfPack are two points back of the 7-12 Dinos for the tenth and final playoff spot in Canada West. TRU needs to win without dropping more than one set as a win in five-sets is worth two points to the victor and one to the loser, while other wins are worth three points to the victor.

Friday night in Calgary, Merritt’s Alex Howard recorded a game-high 18 kills as well as three total blocks. Veteran outside Rylan Ibbetson added seven kills to increase his career tally to 733, while middle Lincoln Wagner added seven kills to go along with four block assists.

The WolfPack women are already playoff bound but they beat Calgary 3-0 (25-19, 25-9, 25-20) last night to improve to 13-6.

Kamloopsian Hail Ward finished with a game-high 15 kills while hitting .542 per cent. She also racked up a trio of blocks. Keira Gent added a further ten kills in a return to her hometown of Calgary while middle Myah Cressy added six kills, two service aces and five block assists.

Setter Libby Meldrum was all over the court for TRU with 31 assists, four service aces and three blocks.

The WolfPack can still move up the Canada West standings and host a first-ever playoff series in program history if they beat Calgary this afternoon and if Manitoba (14-5) loses to Fraser Valley (9-10).

The TRU women return to the court at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon, while the men follow suit at 4:45 p.m.
