‘Winter is back’: Harper Mountain to reopen this Family Day long weekend

KAMLOOPS — An on-again, off-again ski season at Harper Mountain is back on once again.

The Kamloops-area resort says all ski lifts will be open on Sunday and Monday (Feb. 15 and 16) of the Family Day long weekend. In a post on social media, resort staff say they’ll use the day today to prep the runs to welcome skiers and snowboarders.

Harper Mountain was forced to pause operations on Feb. 3 because of an ongoing spell of warmer weather in the Kamloops area. Operations were also on pause between Jan. 13 and Jan. 23.

“This season has definitely kept us on our toes, and honestly, it’s been a little tough,” staff at Harper Mountain said back on Feb. 3.

The Overlander Ski Club has also been on hiatus since Jan. 15, less than a month after the cross-country ski season at Stake Lake began. The Kamloops-area Nordic ski club was also forced to cancel two events due to a continued lack of snow.

At this point, there is no indication if or when the Overlander Ski Club will resume operations for the season.

Despite the drier and warmer month of January, the BC River Forecast Centre says there hasn’t been much of a depletion of the Kamloops-area snowpack. The North Thompson snowpack remained unchanged at 103 per cent of normal, while the South Thompson was at 81 per cent.

While the South Thompson snowpack is down from the 93 per cent it was at last month, it is up from the 78 per cent normal as of Feb. 1 last year.
