PRINCE GEORGE — The Kamloops Blazers haven’t had a lot of good fortune against the Prince George Cougars of late.

The Blazers dropped a 5-2 decision at the CN Centre Friday (Feb. 13) night in the first of a weekend home-and-home. The Cougars have won six of seven meetings between these two B.C. Division rivals this season with two games left to play.

Kamloops (25-18-6-4) is fifth in the Western Conference with 60 points from 53 games. They’re four points back of Prince George (31-19-2-0), who have 64 points from 52 games.

The Cougars opened the scoring on the power play through Brock Souch, who scored the only goal of the opening period Friday. PG doubled its lead early in the second though Terik Parascak.

Vit Zahejsky pulled one back for Kamloops about a minute later, but Souch and Merritt’s Corbin Vaughan made it a 4-1 affair as they both were able to get pucks past Blazers netminder Logan Edmonstone. Edmonstone finished with 34 saves on 39 shots.

Josh Evaschesen also struck for the Blazers to round out the second period scoring as the Cougars led 4-2.

The Cougars were able to close out the third period after they added a fifth goal from Jett Lajoie. He was back in the lineup after a three game suspension for a hit that injured Dryden Deobald back on Jan. 31.

Things got chippy in the final seconds as the Blazers Joaquin Geras, Isa Guram and Vit Zahejsky along with the Cougars Riley Ashe, Phoenix Cahill and Koy Funk were assessed offsetting roughing penalties and 10-minute misconducts

Prince George netminder Josh Ravensbergen had a relatively quiet night as he only had to make 20 saves on 22 shots to pick up the win.

The Blazers are Cougars will rematch at Sandman Centre at 6:00 p.m. this evening. The Blazers are also set to host the Victoria Royals in a Family Day matinee game on Monday (Feb. 16).
