WINNIPEG — It’s another playoff heartbreak for the TRU WolfPack men’s basketball team in Winnipeg, as they dropped a Canada West play-in game Friday (Feb. 13) afternoon.

The WolfPack were beaten by the Calgary Dinos 70-66 in a play-in game at the University of Winnipeg’s Duckworth Centre. The Dinos will move on to face the top-seeded Winnipeg Wesmen in a Canada West quarterfinal game tomorrow.

Rookie Kamloopsian Cason Scott led all scorers with 16 points in his Canada West playoff debut, while Jayden Stephens (15), Dami Farinloye (13) and Steve Stinson (10) all finished in the double digits.

Stephens led all WolfPack players with seven rebounds, while Jayden Green tied a WolfPack program record with a game-high five steals.

Hayden Franson led the way with a double-double for the Dinos who used a 26-12 second quarter to overcome an early deficit Friday. Trailing 19-16 after one quarter, Calgary led 42-31 at half time. While TRU put up more points in both the third and fourth quarters, they weren’t able to claw their way back.

Down by as many as 13 points early in the second half, the WolfPack went on an 11-0 run to cut that lead to just two points with 3:43 left in the third quarter. The Dinos, however, responded with a 10-2 run to take a 54-44 lead into the final 10 minutes.

TRU fought back once again and cut Calgary’s lead to three points with 12 seconds left on the clock. However, that was as close as they would come as Beckett Johnson made a free throw to put the game just out of TRU’s reach.

The WolfPack were seeded eighth while the Dinos were seeded ninth. Both teams went into playoffs with identical 12-8 records, but the WolfPack finished fourth in the Pacific Division while Calgary was fifth in the Prairie Division.

It’s the second season in a row where the WolfPack men lost a playoff game in Winnipeg. Last year, the WolfPack beat Alberta in a play-in game and they were inches away from upsetting the Manitoba Bisons in the quarterfinals.
