James Van Der Beek’s family raised over $1 million through GoFundMe within hours of the actor’s death on February 11th. The Dawson’s Creek star died at 48 following a colorectal cancer battle that began in 2023. Friends launched the fundraiser for his wife Kimberly and their six children, citing that medical costs have “left the family out of funds.” The original $250,000 goal quickly increased to $1.3 million as donations poured in. As of Thursday evening, the GoFundMe had hit $2 million, including large contributions from Steven Spielberg, Zoe Saldana, and Wicked director Jon M. Chu. Organizers said the family is “working hard to stay in their home” and maintain children’s education stability. Van Der Beek had previously sold Dawson’s Creek memorabilia and Varsity Blues jerseys to cover treatment expenses. The funds will support living expenses, bills, and the children’s schooling.
