KAMLOOPS — Each February, the Kamloops White Cane Club holds its blind bowling event at Falcon Lanes, where it asks members of the sighted community to join them for an afternoon of friendly competition.

This year’s event was held Friday (Feb. 13) afternoon and it once again featured representatives of the city and other community members take on the challenge.

“What it’s all about is raising awareness about blindness, vision loss, but it also lets the sighted community know that, hey, we like to socialize and we like to have fun in this type of event,” said Vern Short, the Vice President of the Kamloops White Cane Club.

“This is a great chance to get out into the community, and this is like one of the fun things that you get to do when you’re on City Council,” added councillor Margot Middleton. “It’s interesting to see how involved and how much participation there is in the community, even from those that are, you know, visually impaired. I mean, they don’t miss a step.”

Leslie Nolin, a member of the White Cane Club, brought a pair of glasses that represented different types of vision loss. He said it allows people who can see the ability to see for themselves what its like to have a type of vision loss.

“It helps them help understand what it would be like to have vision loss so that when they see somebody with a White Cane or they talk to somebody who has vision loss, it gives them just a little better understanding of what it would be like,” Nolin said.

Friday’s event also helps bring exposure to those people in the community with vision loss, with them welcoming everyone to learn about what its like to go through life with either total or partial blindness.

“Honestly, the welcoming nature of everyone, I think, just the willingness for people to be vulnerable with you and kind of share their life experiences,” added Sena Odyakmaz, of People in Motion. “It makes me feel so privileged and, and excited because I’m always learning something new.”
