City of Kamloops seeking input on potential corridor improvements near Dufferin multiplex

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops is seeking feedback on conceptual designs for short-and-long-term improvements along the Hillside Drive and Copperhead Drive corridors to handle the anticipated influx in traffic once the new Dufferin arena multiplex opens its doors.

An informal, drop-in session will be held at the Dufferin Elementary School gymnasium next Saturday (Feb. 21) between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. City staff will be on hand so attendees can share feedback, discuss their travel experiences and highlight concerns.

People can also pinpoint challenges and areas of improvement directly on an online map which can be found here. That map will be available until Feb. 26.

“This session is part of early conceptual transportation design work in the area and is intended to gather local insight before any firm decisions are made,” Purvez Irani, the city’s transportation manager, said in a statement. “City staff are seeking feedback on current travel experiences, safety concerns and opportunities to improve traffic flow for all road users.”

According to the city, conceptual improvements under consideration include upgrades to the curvature along Hillside Drive, frontage improvements along Hillside Drive and intersection capacity upgrades.

A multi-use pathway and transit stop along Hillside Drive are also being considered in connection with the future arena multiplex project, which is set to rise on a municipally-owned property next to Kenna Cartwright Park.

“Together, these improvements aim to address long-term transportation needs and support future growth in this area,” a statement from the city added.

“This phase of engagement will help the project team evaluate options and better understand community priorities. No final decisions or construction timelines have been established and community input will play a key role in shaping potential corridor enhancements.”

At this time, it’s also not clear what these corridor improvements will cost the City of Kamloops.

The city previous said that some preliminary earthworks at the site of the arena multiplex could begin as early as June this year and construction is expected to be done by late 2029 or early 2030.
