WolfPack using cautious approach in chase for home playoff series, best regular season record

KAMLOOPS — TRU WolfPack head coach Chad Grimm wants his squad to be at maximum health when the Canada West post-season arrives.

That is why he appears to be taking a cautious approach to his club’s push for program history on the final weekend of the regular season.

“At this time of year, everyone’s got some nicks, so we’ve got to take care of that,” Grimm said. “If some people aren’t playing as much as they might usually, it’s just trying to take care of that to be ready to go into the playoffs. And if that means you host or don’t host, I think it’s more important to be healthy and have some energy and be ready to go.”

The Calgary Dinos (8-10) are scheduled to host the WolfPack (12-6) on Friday and Saturday.

TRU can host a playoff series for the first time since joining the conference in 2005-2006 with a top-four finish in regular season standings.

The ‘Pack are fifth and within striking distance of Manitoba and Trinity, both of which are 13-5 and scheduled to finish the regular season this weekend with two matches apiece against teams beneath them in the standings.

“I think that’s huge for us to play our style of volleyball again,” said WolfPack setter Libby Meldrum. “We’ve kind of gotten away from that the past few weekends. It’ll be good for us to try and get a couple wins under our belt and let the rest of the cards fall where they fall.”

Another carrot dangles for the WolfPack, who can post the best regular season winning percentage in program history with a pair of victories this weekend.

“I did not know that,” Grimm said. “I don’t care. It’s nice that the record is on the positive side and I think it’s nice that over the past couple of years we’ve shown some stability. That’s important, but yeah, as far as the record, it doesn’t really matter to me.”

There is a program-first that matters to Grimm and the WolfPack: reaching the U Sports Women’s Volleyball Championship.

The WolfPack have not been sizzling hot of late, with a record of 2-4 in their last six matches, but they have proven over the course of the campaign they can compete with the top teams in the league – and they feel like they can make some noise in the post-season.

“We are ready,” WolfPack outside hitter Rida Erlalelitepe said. “We can taste it. I know we can be on that level.”
