SOUND OFF: Pathway to the podium

Feb 11, 2026 | 12:04 PM

OVER THE PAST YEAR, we’ve seen how strongly Canadians have stood together in the face of challenges, like global inflation and threats from Trump, and our patriotism is stronger than ever. We’re making progress and creating more opportunities for people across B.C. and Canada. And right now, we have something we can all get excited about.

In Italy, 206 athletes are representing the maple leaf on the world stage at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. From coast to coast to coast, I know we’ll all be cheering on our team every step of the way.

Around 79 Olympic athletes were born in or have strong connections to B.C., making up 38 per cent of Team Canada.

As a former Olympic athlete, I know the thrill and honour of representing our country at the Olympic Games, and I know how special it is to have Canadians rallying behind you and supporting you from near and far.

Our government is proud to play a key role in supporting the goals of many aspiring Olympic and Paralympic athletes. For many of these athletes, their careers started with local sports organizations, and we are happy to help support a pathway for athletes from the playground to the podium here in B.C.

Every child in Canada has a right to chase their dreams, and that’s why we invest $50 million annually into recreational sports in B.C., including helping reduce financial barriers, boost enrolment and participation in sport, and provide training opportunities for coaches and athletes.

Behind each and every athlete, there are countless family members, friends, coaches, teachers, and support staff who have made their journey possible. We also owe them our thanks for giving us so much to cheer for.

As we all spend the next few weeks glued to our TVs, cheering on British Columbians competing in freestyle skiing, snowboard cross, curling, hockey and more, I know we will continue with the same community spirit that has banded us together recently and proudly and loudly applaud our Team Canada.

Go Canada go!
