SD73, City of Kamloops express support for Tumbler Ridge after devastating school shooting

KAMLOOPS —The Kamloops-Thompson School District and the City of Kamloops released statements Wednesday (Feb. 11) regarding the school shooting in Tumbler Ridge.


In an emailed statement to CFJC Today, the school district said, “Together with school communities across BC and beyond, the Kamloops-Thompson School District offers our deep and heartfelt condolences to the Tumbler Ridge school community and to everyone affected by yesterday’s devastating tragedy.” 

“We recognize that this event can be deeply upsetting for students, staff, and families across the province. In SD73, we are committed to supporting our school communities in this difficult time.”

“Supports are available for students and staff who may be impacted. School teams are ready to help connect anyone who could use additional support. A message is being sent to families directly from their schools that includes information about how to navigate this upsetting situation.”

“We hold the Tumbler Ridge community close in our hearts and thoughts and wish them strength on the journey ahead.”

City of Kamloops council issued a statement Wednesday morning that read, “Today, a small community in our province woke up with an enormous weight of loss. The news from Tumbler Ridge is deeply distressing, and our hearts are with the families, friends, and neighbours whose lives have been irrevocably changed.”

“Kamloops City Council would like to express our profound sorrow for the people of Tumbler Ridge. We acknowledge that shock, sorrow, and disbelief are being felt across British Columbia, and we recognize the lasting impact this tragedy will have on those who lived through it.”

“Kamloops City Council stands with the people of Tumbler Ridge in their grief. We hold space for their pain, and we extend our thanks to the first responders and medical professionals and to those who will continue to support the victims and their families in the days ahead.”

“In moments like this, communities lean on one another. We encourage kindness, patience, and care for those who may be struggling in the days ahead.”

“The City of Kamloops will lower the flags at all City facilities to half-mast until February 18.”
