Blazers building momentum in playoff push amid busy schedule and road trips

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers returned home with a mixed bag from their most recent road trip. Two dominant wins over the Victoria Royals and Vancouver Giants and two games the team might want back against the Royals and Everett Silvertips. The team is also finishing a stretch of games going back to January, which saw them play 10 times in 16 nights.

“Really positive results, for a stretch like that,” said Steve Marr, who is an assistant coach for the squad. “Obviously, the one game in Victoria was really disappointing. Then, going into it Everett, against the best team in the country, we felt we had a good enough effort in the first two periods and we gave ourselves a chance to try and close it off. We played a little bit on our heels and let it slip away.”

Ty Coupland made his impact felt on Tuesday’s (Feb. 3) 11-1 shellacking of the Victoria Royals. He scored his first two goals in a Blazers uniform since being acquired from the Red Deer Rebels at the WHL trade deadline last month. In total, Coupland chipped in four goals during the four-game road trip. The 18-year-old also had a nice homecoming Saturday against the Vancouver Giants.

“Yeah, quite a bit of family there,” said Coupland, who is a North Vancouver product. “It was nice to catch up with them and see them. That was my second time playing in Vancouver and my third season here, so I don’t get to do it very often. It was nice to kind of cherish that and share the game with them.”

The Blazers have a record of 6-3-1 in their last ten games and sit just two points behind Prince George for third place in the Western Conference. Harrison Brunicke didn’t suit up for Kamloops on the road trip due to an injury sustained on January 31. All signs point to him being available this weekend against the Cougars – the team responsible for his injury, in what the Blazers called a questionable hit. Bad blood between the two teams is sure to come out this weekend.

“It’s an opportunity for us to make a huge leap,” stated Marr on the rivalry between the two teams. “We’ve got to be prepared and it’s going to be the same messaging that we’ve been telling the guys, essentially all year. It’s how we play as a team and just finding a way to be focused on it, visualize it and bring it right from the opening drop Friday night.”

Kamloops starts the weekend on Friday (Feb. 13) in Prince George. Puck drop is at 7:00 PM. They then return home on Saturday, with puck drop at 6:00 pm at the Sandman Centre.
