BC Teachers Federation reaches tentative agreement over new contract

KAMLOOPS — The BC Teacher’s Federation (BCTF) has reached a tentative agreement with the BC Public School Employers Association (BCPSEA).

The union sent a notice to its members which said the deal was reached over the weekend, but no details have been made public. The new deal is expected to be identical to one reached between the B.C. government and the BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU), which included a three per cent wage increase in each of the next four years.

This agreement comes just one month after the BCTF had publicly announced it had reached an impasse in negotiations. At that time, the BCTF said while the province was offering wage increases in line with other unions, it was not providing funding to target working and learning conditions.

“In response, teachers across the province mobilized, sending thousands of messages to government officials and demonstrating strong public solidarity,” a Jan. 23 BCTF statement said.

“As a result of this advocacy, BCTF leadership engaged in a series of discussions with senior government representatives. The government came forward with a commitment to address key priorities, including teacher workload and improved learning conditions for students.”

It’s not clear whether this agreement will be forwarded on to BCTF members for a vote.

Teachers in B.C. have been without a contract since June of last year, and the BCTF and BCPSEA have been in bargaining since March.

The BCTF represents about 52,000 teachers in British Columbia.
