KAMLOOPS — This week, ASK Wellness will begin welcoming residents back to the Crossroads after more than a year-long renovation of the old hotel site along Seymour Street.

Once decrepit, the Crossroads in Kamloops is getting the final touches of a lengthy, multi-million-dollar renovation, with 25 clients set to arrive this week before ASK works to fill the rest of the building over the course of a month.

“It had become so, so derelict, frankly, and we had really been pushing the province – and frankly health, as well – to say, ‘We can’t keep doing what we are doing here, which is very low-barrier housing,'” said ASK Wellness CEO Bob Hughes. “This is the product of about a five-year journey to get us to the point to fully retrofit the building, and get it ready to welcome in the former residents.”

Crossroads will have 24/7 staffing, providing clients with access to mental health and substance use help. They are also working to ensure the clients and staff become a part of the surrounding community.

“We are coming back in and really hoping to, I think, tone down some of the intensity of the people coming into the building that were here,” said Hughes. “But the pressures are immense, as you can imagine, with so many unsheltered people – people in shelters in some cases for over a year. And what people really want is some level of housing and I think this is a vital part of the continuum as one of the the starting points.”

The total investment into the Crossroads was $9.9 million.

While Hughes does note the building is low barrier, he believes it will serve as a crucial stepping stone on the path to recovery.

“We have really doubled down on this idea that it’s not just housing, you need health and you need access to employment and a sense of belonging in community. I think that is what our goal is here – to really embed a sense of hope and a sense of inspiration to say what is next in your life,” said Hughes.

Work on the landscaping is still underway, with crews also finishing off the exterior siding.
