LANGLEY, B.C. — A four goal first period was more than enough for the Kamloops Blazers as they shutout the Vancouver Giants 5-0 Saturday (Feb. 7) night.

Logan Edmonstone made 26 saves – 13 of which came in the third period – as the Blazers took four of eight points on their four-game road trip that also included stops in Victoria and Everett.

“The boys really played hard,” Edmonstone, who leads all WHL goaltenders with four shutouts, said post-game. “We came out with a hot start – four goals in the first was really important to our game plan tonight.”

“We just came ready to play here,” added forward JP Hurlbert. “It was a tough one last night so the start was real important for us. Scoring four goals in the first period is good, and it was a responsible finish from the team.”

Hurlbert, Nathan Behm and Josh Evaschesen all had two point nights as the Blazers (25-16-6-4) sit fourth in the WHL Western Conference with 60 points from 52 games. Vancouver (19-30-1-2) is in 12th place with 41 points from 52 games.

Sixteen-year-old Asher Gingras opened the scoring Saturday at the Langley Events Centre after he snapped a shot past Vancouver’s Kelton Pyne to make it 1-0.

Kamloops native Jordan Keller doubled the score with a power play goal just past the 10 minute mark, before goals from Behm and Ty Coupland less than a minute apart made it 4-0 Blazers after 20 minutes.

JP Hurlbert then moved into a tie for the WHL goalscoring lead with his 36th of the season after defenceman Madden Tymchak banked a pass off the wall and found the American forward on a breakaway.

With the win effectively secured, the Blazers focused their efforts in preserving Edmonstone’s shutout, as the Giants pressed on to try and get on the scoresheet.

“You want it for a guy like that,” Hurlbert added. “He does so much hard work and a lot of things right behind the scenes. We’re real happy for him. he deserved it.”

Pyne made 19 saves on 23 shots in the first period before he made way for Burke Hood, who allowed one goals on 26 shots in 40 minutes of relief work.

The Blazers return to Kamloops to prepare for a home-and-home against the Prince George Cougars (30-19-2-0), who are in third place in the Western Conference.

The teams will play in Prince George on Friday (Feb. 13) night and at the Sandman Centre at 6:00 p.m. on Valentine’s Day Saturday. They’ll also face the Victoria Royals in a 2:00 p.m. matinee on Family Day Monday (Feb. 16).
