WolfPack beat UNBC to begin final weekend of regular season; rookie Merrigan sets program record

PRINCE GEORGE — It’s a winning start to the final weekend of the Canada West regular season for the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) WolfPack.

The playoff-bound WolfPack men’s team beat the UNBC Timberwolves 77-60 in Prince George Friday (Feb. 6) night to improve to 11-8 with one game left to play. The WolfPack sit fourth in the Pacific Division.

The WolfPack were led by rookie Cason Scott, who finished with a team-high 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Three other players – Jayden Stephens (15), Gavin Reis (12), and Dami Farinloye (11) also hit double-digits in scoring, while Steve Stinson and Jaeden Bynoe added nine points each. Jayden Green also chipped in with six assists and five steals.

In an matinee game for the women, Hailey Merrigan, a first-year forward from Australia, set a new WolfPack program record with 20 rebounds as TRU beat UNBC 53-44. Merrigan also added 11 points, three blocks and three assists Friday.

She eclipsed the previous record of 19 which was achieved three times – twice by Diane Schuetze in 2011 and 2013 and once by Morgan Eichenberger earlier this season.

Sydney Vollrath scored a team-high 14 points while Olena Vasylenko added nine assists as TRU improved to 7-12. It’s the first time since the 2019-20 season that the WolfPack hit the seven-win mark.

The WolfPack teams will rematch against the Timberwolves this evening to close out the regular season. The women play at 5:00 p.m. followed by the men at 7:00 p.m.
