Kamloops pubs and sports betters prepared for Super Bowl Sunday

KAMLOOPS — The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) is expecting a record number of bets to be placed ahead of the Super Bowl this Sunday (Feb 8). With the nearby Seattle Seahawks back in the big game, it’s expected to drive sports betters to PlayNow and into local pubs, as the hospitality sector gears up for one of the busiest days of the year. With the Olympics also underway and the World Cup just months away, the Super Bowl could be the start of a surge.

“We have a day planned like none other. It’s our busiest day of the year,” said Al Deacon, owner at The Fox’n Hounds. “It’s going to be a sold-out crowd, lots of prizes, lots of stuff going on in here all day long. Everyone leaves here happy. We just need a Seahawks win.”

While NFL allegiances can be varied in Canada, British Columbia’s geographic ties to Seattle make the Seahawks the proverbial home team.

“Absolutely, with Seattle being so close to us we have a lot of Seattle fans – as well, the Patriots. They were huge and they have a big following, as well,” said Robert Wiggins, owner at Pogue Mahone Irish Alehouse.

“It’s no surprise B.C. betters on PlayNow are betting on the Seattle Seahawks. I believe 75 per cent of bets are on the Seahawks, and interestingly enough, they started as 3.5-point favourites earlier last week and now have moved to 4.5-point favourites,” said Matt Lee, communications spokesperson with BCLC. “Certainly, I think a lot of fingers are crossed on the Seattle Seahawks to get the job done.”

BCLC is expecting a record setting Super Bowl in terms of bets placed, whether that be on the game itself, or wild props, like the result of the coin toss, colour of the Gatorade dump and length of the national anthem.

“People are willing to spend their entertainment dollars toward sports betting these days, as opposed to perhaps going to a movie theatre,” added Lee. “People are more willing to put a little bit more skin in the game when they are watching football or hockey. And then number two, just more cultural acceptance toward sports betting, as well.”

Both Fox’n Hounds and Pogue’s are nearly at capacity ahead of the Super Bowl with just a few seats left for those looking to join the party.

“It’s going to be fantastic. We have a ton of door prizes, we have big screen TVs, cappuccino machines, coolers, portable stereos, BBQs, the list goes on and on. It’s one of our biggest – it is the biggest sports day of the year,” said Wiggins.

“And hospitality needs it, industry needs it,” said Deacon. “Since COVID, all these little perks that come along just help us keep the doors open.”
