‘It has kept us on our toes’: Harper Mountain pauses operations again due to warm weather, lack of snow

KAMLOOPS — An ongoing spell of warmer weather has forced Harper Mountain to pause operations for the second time this ski and snowboard season.

The Kamloops-area ski hill took to social media this week to announce it was pausing operations because of a lack of colder temperatures and snow. Operations were previously on pause between Jan. 13 and Jan. 23.

“This season has definitely kept us on our toes, and honestly, it’s been a little tough,” staff at Harper Mountain said on Tuesday (Feb. 3). “We’re disappointed to step back, but we’re also feeling hopeful. The forecast is trending cooler, and we’re staying positive about what’s ahead.”

Environment Canada had been forecasting temperatures into the double digits this week, though records show temperatures didn’t quite get to that level. The weather office is still forecasting a high of 8 C Friday (Feb. 6), and 9 C this weekend, well above the normal high of 2 C.

“Thank you for sticking with us and for all the patience and support you’ve shown during this unpredictable winter,” Harper Mountain added. “We can’t wait to see the place covered in fresh snow again.”

The ongoing spell of warm weather also forced the Overlander Ski Club to halt operations at the Stake Lake ski trails as of Jan. 15, less than a month after the cross-country ski season began. The Nordic ski club was also forced to cancel two events due to a continued lack of snow.

At this point, there is no indication when either winter recreational area could reopen.
