Renovation work officially underway at North Kamloops Library

KAMLOOPS — Renovations for the North Kamloops Library officially began on Monday (Feb. 2).  

This is the first and largest phase of construction, mostly focusing on the staff area, programming room, young adult area and children’s area.   

Bookworms need not worry, as the Thompson Nicola Regional Library (TNRL) says the library will continue to be open through the renovation process, and books will be available if the sections aren’t under construction and those that are can be placed on hold online. 

“The main thing that we need to do here is to do some maintenance on the library. It hasn’t seen any real significant upgrades since 2010, when it was first built,” Margo Schiller, the TNRL’s Manager of Kamloops Libraries and Engagement said.

“The carpet that we’re standing on is the original carpet. Most of the paint is original, so it’s just time to give the branch a bit of a facelift and tackle some of those maintenance items.”  

In December, a contract was awarded to Kamloops-based A&T Project Developments to carry out the renovations. The contract had a maximum price of $364,546.53, which included a 15 per cent contingency fee. 

The TNRL hopes to have all phases of renovation done by the summer of this year, though noise will be noticeable during that time. 

“If you’ve been to the downtown library, it’s going to look like that,” Schiller said. “That’s kind of the colour palette that we are going for. We are also getting a new information desk. Then we are expanding the footprint of the children’s area to make a bigger space.”
