WolfPack volleyball teams lose to Alberta to begin final home weekend of Canada West season

KAMLOOPS — It was a difficult start to the weekend for the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) WolfPack volleyball teams as they went up against the University of Alberta Friday (Jan. 30) night at the TCC.

The WolfPack women dropped a 3-1 (25-21, 14-25, 15-25, 16-25) decision to the Pandas in a battle between two of the top teams in the nation. The Pandas were ranked first heading into the weekend while the WolfPack were fourth.

Keira Gent led the way for the WolfPack with nine kills while Maria Dancheva added seven kills and five total blocks. Faith Christensen added five kills and a trio of block assists to kick off the final regular season home weekend of her WolfPack career.

The TRU women drop to 12-5 on the season and sit in fourth place in the Canada West standings. The Pandas (15-2) remain in first place with three games left.

The WolfPack men also lost 3-1 (17-25, 25-22, 24-26, 22-25) to Alberta Golden Bears Friday night.

Alex Howard finished with 12 kills on just 20 attacks with two errors for a hitting percentage of .500. Playing the final home weekend of his WolfPack career, Rylan Ibbetson added 15 kills, two aces and seven digs.

The TRU men are in ninth place in Canada West with a 6-11 record. Alberta at 10-5 sits in fifth place with three games remaining.

The WolfPack will look to split the weekend as they rematch against their Alberta counterparts. The women get things going at 3:00 p.m. with the men set to play at 4:45 p.m.
