Edmonstone makes 47 saves as Blazers snap Vees 14-game win streak

PENTICTON — Josh Evaschesen scored twice, while Logan Edmonstone made 47 saves as the Kamloops Blazers finally ended the Penticton Vees’ 14 game win streak Saturday (Jan. 30) night.

Ty Bonkowski, Nathan Behm and Isa Guram also found the back of the net as the Blazers (23-15-5-4) beat the BC Division-leading Vees 5-2 at the South Okanagan Events Centre. The Vees (29-10-4-3) came into the game riding the WHL’s longest active win streak that dated back to Dec. 15.

“The boys really battled hard in the d-zone,” Edmonstone said post-game. “They did a good job of boxing out and letting me do my thing in front of the net. It feels good to break a streak.”

Evaschesen and Bonkowski had the Blazers up 2-0 after the first period, a lead Kamloops took into the third period.

Evaschesen added to the Blazers lead at 3:42 of the third period when he deflected a puck past Vees netminder Ethan McCallum, who finished with 20 saves on 23 shots.

Goals from Matteo Danis at 5:10 and Ethan Weber at 17:48 of the third made it a one goal game, before a pair of empty netters from Behm and Guram 20 seconds apart sealed the win for the Blazers.

“A huge win for the team to knock of those guys,” Evaschesen who also assisted on Behm’s empty netter added. Behm also finished with three points as he assisted both of Evaschesen’s goals.

The Vees remain in second place in the WHL’s Western Conference with 65 points from 46 games. Fourth place Kamloops has 55 points from 47 games, and they’re three points back of third-place Prince George (28-14-2-0).

The Blazers and Cougars play each other at Sandman Centre this evening (Jan. 31). It’s country night in Kamloops and the puck drop is set to drop at 6:00 p.m.

The two BC Division rivals last played each other on Jan. 16 in Kamloops, a game the Cougars took 7-6 in overtime.
