Unplug and Play Week celebrates 16 years of connecting families

KAMLOOPS – It’s the 16th year for the annual Unplug and Play Week that helps promote literacy programs throughout Kamloops. It’s seven days when families can engage in activities that don’t require the use of a phone, tablet, computer or television.

All the activities are free and run from 9:00 a.m. to just after 6:00 p.m.

“We have lots of free events for all ages. Some of the really fun events that we’ve seen happen already are our Interactive Centre drop-in here at the John Tod Centre. We have a bunch of youth events in Kamloops, as well as with the library,” said Jodi Lebourdais, program coordinator at Literacy in Kamloops.

Unplug and Play Week hopes to connect people offline — especially students who are more reliant on technology than ever.

“We do the student challenge for Unplug and Play Week, which goes out to about 9,000 students in more than 30 schools. We get students who reflect on their time spent unplugging and reducing screen time throughout the week. The biggest thing that we hear from families and from those students is the value of connecting with their peers, connecting with their family members and connecting with their community,” said Lebourdais.

The Unplug and Play event schedule can be found online at the Literacy in Kamloops website and the last event is this Saturday, January 31.
