Kamloops Courthouse gallery asks community for donated jewelry to help Y Women’s Emergency Shelter

KAMLOOPS – The Kamloops Courthouse Gallery and Artisan Market are asking people from across Kamloops to donate old jewelry they aren’t using anymore for the Lost Earring Project, which helps the Kamloops Y Women’s Emergency Shelter. Donated jewelry can be anything from silver and gold to costume jewelry. 

Jewelry is collected until the end of February and then artists will work on pieces until May 2, when all pieces are put on display.

Fifty per cent of the sale goes to artists, and the other 50 per cent goes to the women’s shelter.

“We just started this project in January… and they had done this previously — this combination with the women’s shelter and the Courthouse Gallery. They had done this project several years ago and we just thought this might be a good time to redo that project because it was very successful the last time,” said Jan Scruggs, president of the Kamloops Courthouse Gallery and Artisan Market.

The team at the gallery hopes this will encourage artists to incorporate jewelry pieces into their work, offering a unique challenge.

“It’s a great project. It’s something that will stretch some artists. Some may have never used jewelry in their projects before. Last time, we had all sorts of art using jewelry where you wouldn’t expect it,” said Scruggs.

Jewelry donations can be dropped off at the John Tod Centre, the downtown YMCA and the Courthouse Gallery.
