Overlander Loppet cancelled due to continued lack of snow

KAMLOOPS — The Overlander Ski Club has announced the cancellation of next Sunday’s (Feb. 1) Overlander Loppet due to a continued lack of snow.

The Kamloops-area ski club made the announcement in a statement, saying they waited until the eleventh hour before making the decision.

“We waited as long as we could for better weather, but we can’t guarantee a safe and fun race for everyone on Feb 1,” club officials said in the statement.

The Stake Lake ski trails have been closed since Jan. 15 because of a lack of snow and warmer temperatures. While the mercury has dropped to seasonal levels, there hasn’t much – if any – precipitation.

“We’re hoping for more snow to finish the season at Stake Lake,” the Overlander statement added, noting people looking to cross country ski can do so at Sun Peaks Resort, which is hosting the third annual T-REX (Team Relay Experience) race on Saturday, March 7.

This is the second event that the Overlander Ski Club has had to cancel this season. The Teck Okanagan Cup #2 race was scheduled for Jan. 18, but it was called off due to “challenging weather conditions.”

People who had registered and paid fees for the 2026 Overlander Loppet will be issued refunds.

“Thank you for your support and patience as we navigate the challenging snow conditions this season,” the Overlander Ski Club statement added.
