Prescribed burn taking place within Williams Lake Community Forest
WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — Residents in Williams Lake and the surrounding area, along with drivers travelling on Highway 20, may notice smoke over the next few weeks.
The BC Wildfire Service says a prescribed burn of up to 20 hectares within the Williams Lake Community Forest, nearly 10 kilometres west of Williams Lake on the north side of Highway 20, will continue periodically until Feb. 13, 2026.
In a news release issued Thursday (Jan. 22), the wildfire service says “low-to-moderate-intensity” spot fires will be lit within pre-established boundaries to remove combustible materials. It’s to create a more fire-resilient forest and reduce juniper density.
The wildfire service notes that smoke from within the burning perimeter may be visible for up to 72 hours after ignition. Ignitions will proceed only if conditions are suitable and allow for smoke dissipation.
