CMHA activates extreme weather alert as Kamloops temperatures dip following mild spell
KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) has reactivated its extreme weather response protocol as temperatures approach more season levels following a spell of mild weather.
The alert took affect at 9:00 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 17) as Environment Canada forecasts overnight lows between -4 C and -7 C between Saturday and Thursday (Jan. 22) night for now. Day time high temperatures will also hover between 1 C and -1 C, before cooling off on Thursday.
“Pursuant to sec. 2(2)(b) of the Assistance to Shelter Act an Extreme Weather Alert (EWA) is being issued for the City of Kamloops, British Columbia,” CMHA said in a statement. “This EWA activates the authorities in the Assistance to Shelter Act for police to assist persons at risk due to extreme weather conditions and remains in effect until it is cancelled.”
While the EWA is active, CMHA will provide extra beds at the Emerald Centre (271 Victoria St. W.), Rosethorn House (259 Victoria St. W.) and the Merit Place (725 Notre Dame Dr.) shelters. Those temporary spaces will be operational between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. until the EWA is lifted.
