KAMLOOPS — The process to renovate the Crossroads Inn began back in 2023, when ASK Wellness first applied to council to rezone the property, and while approved, construction did not begin until March of last year

The project to turn nine hotel rooms on the first floor of the building into residential units and add kitchenettes to the other 42 units in the building is nearing completion. ASK Wellness is looking at taking occupancy of the 51-unit space in March.

“The work done has been transformative,” said ASK Wellness CEO Bob Hughes. “We know that we are going to have a very, very different look to the inside of the building that is going to bring some dignity and quality of life for people. We are able to sustain low rents which is really critical and we have an excited staff and residents that just can’t wait to get back in.”

Crossroads first opened in 2011 as a transitional and supportive housing building. Hughes stated some members of the public have tied the facility to increased crime and street disorder in the neighbourhood, but the operational hiatus during construction proves they weren’t the sole issue.

“I think a lot of people believed it was all tied to the Crossroads being there, but I think we can all look at it and say, well after a year of the Crossroads not in operation, we are not the cause of those issues that the neighbourhood is facing,” said Hughes. “I’m hoping there is a renewed campaign to try to say, ‘How can we support these people to access services and how do we deal with some of the violence and drug trafficking and issues that have been in that area?’ I think that is the thing we need to face.”
